Exemptions beyond homestead
Most of these stack on top of the homestead exemption rather than replacing it, and all of them share one deadline: 1 March†. Two are worth far more than the rest — the total service-connected disability exemption and the first responder exemption, both of which can remove the homestead from property tax entirely.
They wait to be told. Nobody tells you. Property appraisers administer exemptions on application, not on eligibility — so a qualifying veteran who never applied simply pays the full bill. The good news is that once granted, most exemptions renew automatically while you remain eligible†, so the effort is once rather than annual.
The ones with real money attached
- Total and permanent service-connected disability. a veteran with a total and permanent service-connected disability may be exempt from property tax on the homestead entirely†. This is the largest exemption in Florida property tax and it is routinely unclaimed.
- First responder totally and permanently disabled in the line of duty. a first responder totally and permanently disabled in the line of duty may be exempt from property tax on the homestead entirely†.
- Age 65 with a partial service-connected disability. a partially disabled veteran aged 65 or over may receive a discount on the homestead equal to the percentage of the disability† — a percentage discount rather than a flat sum, so on a large disability rating it is substantial.
The smaller flat exemptions
| Exemption | Amount | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Widow or widower | $5,000 | Ends on remarriage; a divorced surviving spouse does not qualify |
| Legally blind | $5,000 | Requires certification |
| Totally and permanently disabled | $5,000 | Separate from the veteran exemptions |
| Veteran, 10% or more disability | $5,000 | Service-connected, evidenced by the VA |
These are modest against the standard $51,411† homestead exemption, but they stack, they are permanent once granted, and they cost one form. The widow and widower exemption at $5,000† and the blind or totally disabled exemption at $5,000† are the two most often left unclaimed simply because nobody mentions them at a difficult time.
The senior exemption, and why we will not give you a number
The additional senior exemption is different from the rest in two ways. the additional senior exemption exists only where the county or city has adopted it by ordinance — it is not statewide† — so whether it exists at all depends on where you live. And the senior income limit is adjusted annually for inflation, so last year’s figure is wrong†.
An indexed figure published in an article is wrong within twelve months and stays online for years. The Department of Revenue publishes the current limit annually, and your county property appraiser applies it. Ask them, in the year you are applying, rather than trusting any website — including this one — to have kept up.
Exemptions that are not about who you are
- Agricultural classification. Not an exemption but a classification, assessing land on its agricultural use rather than market value. It is genuinely powerful on acreage and genuinely scrutinised.
- Deployed servicemember. A discount proportional to the days deployed outside the United States during the previous calendar year.
- Living quarters for parents or grandparents. Where you have built or reconstructed quarters for a relative aged 62 or over, some of the added value may be excluded from assessment.
- Renewable energy source devices. Certain solar and renewable improvements are excluded from the assessed value of residential property.
That last one matters more than it sounds. It means adding solar can increase what a house is worth without increasing what it is assessed at — one of the few improvements in Florida that does not arrive with a larger tax bill attached.
How to apply
- Go to your county property appraiser, not the tax collector. They are different offices and only one grants exemptions.
- Apply by 1 March† for that tax year. Late applications are possible in some circumstances but they are an appeal, not a form.
- Bring the evidence. The VA letter, the physician’s certification, the death certificate, the proof of residency — whichever applies.
- Check your November tax bill to confirm the exemption actually appears. Granted and applied are two different things, and the bill is where you find out.

Common questions
What property tax exemptions can Florida veterans get?
A $5,000 exemption at 10% or more service-connected disability; a full homestead exemption for total and permanent service-connected disability; and for a partially disabled veteran aged 65 or over, a discount equal to the disability percentage.
Is there a senior property tax exemption in Florida?
Only where the county or city has adopted it by ordinance — it is not statewide. The income limit is adjusted annually for inflation, so check the current figure with your property appraiser rather than any published article.
What is the Florida widow exemption?
A $5,000 exemption for a surviving spouse who has not remarried. A divorced surviving spouse does not qualify, and it ends on remarriage.
When do I have to apply for a Florida property tax exemption?
By 1 March for that tax year, to the county property appraiser rather than the tax collector. Once granted, most exemptions renew automatically while you remain eligible.
Does adding solar increase my Florida property tax?
Certain renewable energy source devices are excluded from the assessed value of residential property — one of the few improvements that can raise what a house is worth without raising what it is assessed at.
Exemptions sit in Chapter 196 of the Florida Statutes and are administered by each county property appraiser, who determines eligibility on application. Amounts subject to annual indexing are published by the Department of Revenue each year — confirm the current figure before relying on it.
